A little history on the traditional Wedding Cake

What is more special than a wedding? I can help make the event even more special by creating unique cake designs according to your specifications. A small selection of what I have provided in the past is shown here. Please remember I will work with you to design whatever you need and can provide cakes ranging from the traditional fruit cake as well as Madeira, Chocolate, Carrot, or others.

Did you know that wedding cakes date back to Roman times? In those days the cake was broken over the brides head, a technique that I would not recommend with my creations! In Medieval England the custom was to stack a pile of buns between the newlyweds and the couple would try and kiss over the top of them. If successful this was a sign of a good marriage. By the mid 19th century cakes were now single tiered plum cakes (Rich fruit cakes) and in Victorian times white icing became popular as a sign of purity, where previously it had been a sign of wealth as refined sugar used to very expensive. Now the once simple cake has evolved to a multi-tiered extravaganza. for a long time 3 tiers were popular with the first for the reception, the second for distribution and the top for the christening.

To help you make the choice of cake I can arrange tasting and other activities to ensure your cake is the perfect one for you. The design of your cake can also work alongside your wedding theme - hearts, cupids, or simply the colour to match your dress, the bridesmaids dresses, or your flowers. The flowers on a cake can be fresh to match the bouquets or hand made sugar flowers which can be then kept as a keepsake. The setting up of the cake can also vary from traditional pillars to any arrangement that will create those special memories in your mind and in your photographs for years to come.
